I know.
Sit for a minute before you do anything else. You don't have to read all of this. You don't have to read any of it. The page is here because you are here. That's enough for now.
Something happened. Maybe a cooler. Maybe a long night that didn't go the way it was supposed to. Maybe you played a hand you knew was wrong while you were playing it and you can't stop replaying it now. Maybe nothing in particular happened, and that's the part that's heavy — you've been playing for a long time and tonight is the night it caught up with you.
Whatever it was, the part of you that is still feeling it is not the part that needs help with strategy. There is no leak to find. There is no spot to study. The hurting is not happening in the part of you that reads charts. It's happening underneath all of that.
Most poker writing doesn't reach down there. Most poker writing is written for the player who's doing fine and wants to do better. You are not doing fine tonight. You don't need to be told to review your hands. You need someone to sit with you while you stop bracing for a minute.
So sit. Don't open a solver. Don't look at your graph. Don't try to figure out what to do tomorrow. Tomorrow will be there when tomorrow comes. Right now, just be here.
There is a part of you the session cannot reach. It was there before the hand. It will be there after. It has been watching you play for as long as you have been sitting down, and it has not been hurt by any of it. Not the cooler. Not the downswing. Not the years. It has been watching, with a kind of patient love, while you suffered through things it was never inside of.
You are spending too much of your life in the part the river can reach. There is somewhere else in you to live from. The path of poker, walked long enough, can be a way of finding it. Some nights the path takes you here, to a page on the internet, because that's where the next step happens to be.
You can close the tab in a minute if you want. You can keep reading. You can put on the voice version of one of these chapters and lie down. Whatever you do, the part of you that needed to be loved tonight has been seen. The hand happens to someone else. The one being addressed right now is the watcher, and the watcher is fine.
If you want to read further when you're ready:
-
The Riverfor when a specific hand is haunting you
-
The Long Lossfor when nothing has been working for weeks or months
-
The Three A.M. Hatredfor when you hate the game and yourself for playing it
-
The Person at the Tablefor when you didn't like who you became tonight
There is also a voice version of the whole book if reading is not what you can do right now.
If the heaviness tonight is more than poker — if it's gotten beyond the game and into the rest of your life, and you are not sure what to do with it — please reach out to one of these. They are real people, awake right now, who answer.
