Part Two — The Playing · 16 of 22

Part two. The playing.

You have seen what the game is. Now, what do you do with your hands once you sit down inside it?

I have to be honest with you about what this part of the book is and is not. It is not a box of tricks. There is no secret sequence I can hand you that wins, because you already know there is no move that wins — the whole game forbids it. What there is instead is a craft, and a craft is learned the slow way, over years and a great many small defeats. What I can give you here is the shape of that craft: the four things the game asks you to learn, and the order they tend to arrive in. The map. The walking is yours, and it does not end.

Four arts: to watch, to disappear, to climb, to be still. The first three are about the other person. The last is about you, and it is the ground the other three stand on. Take them in turn.
